錢鍾書 (讀《拉奧孔》)說這句是：「理論是灰黑的，生命的黃金樹是碧綠的。」(Und grün des Lebens goldner Baum.) 他說，黃金是虛色，只有情感價值，沒有觀感價值。
孫老師應該多寫回憶錄。很少有書符合歌德的話，「理論是灰黑的，生命的黃金樹則是碧綠的。」(錢鍾書譯)，孫康宜的《走出白色恐怖》處處是生命的黃金樹，處處是落地的麥子。
